On the eve of the Monsters of Rock Cruise, guests gathered at our home in Miami, the Magic City Casino, for an evening of music while catching up with our extended family.
The night kicked off with some music from DJ Will and continued on with what I believe was the first ever “big stage” performance from Jason Bieler & Jeff Scott Soto at the casino. Sadly, I missed their performance as I was scanning in guests at the entrance, but we can tell you that Magnus Henriksson from Eclipse made an appearance and that the duo were up to their normal antics.
They were followed by new additions to the MORC family, Wildstreet. A band that hails from New York City. Wildstreet began their career back in 2006, releasing their self-titled debut album in 2009, quickly winning over rock fans worldwide by licensing songs to MTV, VH1, Coca-Cola, Oxygen, E!, and showcasing at SXSW, M3 Rock Festival, Rocklahoma, and now the Monsters of Rock Cruise.
Our captain Ted Poley continued the show with a little help from two special guests, who further ignited an explosive set of Danger Danger favorites. The show included a “mini Ted,” moment with the multi-talented artist Kobi Reese who hit the stage adorned in a blonde wig, tat sleeves and his very own D2 battle vest. And, as if that wasn’t enough, Jean Beauvoir later hit the stage making it a very special evening. This year’s band featured bassist Marc Dube, guitarist Fred Gorhau, and drummer Paul Del Boccio.
Paul gave everyone a scare when he was resuscitated after going into cardiac arrest immediately following the band’s second performance on-board the ship. Thankfully, he was able to seek medical attention in the Bahamas and Miami, and is doing well.
The Cruel Intentions returned to MORC again this year and also brought the fun to the Mountain festival last fall. I was excited to watch the show, but made the mistake of thinking I could shoot their set from the front row. It seemed like a good idea until the band started, the crowd got hyped, and the beer started spilling. So, I eventually had to retreat, and choose a better vantage point.
One of the great things about this venue is we have many options for watching the show including general admission standing room in front of the racetrack stage, as well as grandstand seating and even a great view behind the soundboard with the bar just behind it.
The evening ended with an all-star jam which included performances from Little Ozzy and the former Skid Row frontman and actor, Sebastian Bach, who oddly departed from his on material to sing us some Journey at once point.
As the band played on, we visited with our family until the security guards literally kicked us out of the grandstands. But, the party continued in the Casino where monsters could be found gambling and crowding in at the inside bar before calling it a night (or morning) and resting up for the sail away out of Port of Miami.
More coverage from the boat coming soon!
