The Rock for Ronnie event took place yesterday, May 19, 2024, at Warner Center Park in Woodland Hills, CA. This annual concert is hosted by radio and TV personality Eddie Trunk, and is organized by the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund.
The event aims to raise awareness and funds for cancer prevention and research. This year’s theme was the “Year of the Dragon,” a symbol closely associated with the late singer Ronnie James Dio, who passed away from gastric cancer in 2010.The event had various ways to help support the Dio Cancer Fund. Not only was there a silent auction and raffle, but there was also a specially created Garden of Hope for direct contributions on-site. Also, a check in the amount of twenty-five thousand dollars was contributed to the research that Dr. David Wong by Dr. Sandeep Kapoor and Wendy Dio. Dr. Wong’s groundbreaking work focuses on developing a non-invasive saliva test for early cancer detection.
There were also various food trucks and assorted vendor booths that added to the lively atmosphere. Unusual crafts and other items were available for purchase. There were two live guitar auctions, one for a specially designed one of a kind guitar made by Jim Cara that was staged played by Lita Ford. The other guitar was signed by the entire Quiet Riot band. Both guitars raised eighteen thousand dollars for the cancer fund. Radio and television personality Eddie Trunk, who is heard on SiriusXM’s 103 Faction Talk channel, once again hosted the event. Wendy Dio surprised Trunk with a small award for his continued contributions to all the events.
The concert also featured performances from X-Comm, Billy Nichol Band, Jason Charles Miller and the Dio Disciples. And billed as the Eddie Trunk All-Stars the guest were a who’s who in classic rock. Musicians who performed were Lita Ford and her band mates Patrick Kennison and Marten Andersson, Abby Gennett (Slunt), Brett Scallions (Fuel), guitarists Doug Aldrich (Dio, Dead Daisies, Whitesnake), Marc Ferrari (Keel), Tracii Guns (LA Guns), Robert Sarzo (Hurricane); bass players Julia Lage (Vixen) and Marty O’Brien (Daughtry, Lita Ford); vocalists Dewey Bragg (Kill Devil Hill), Dyna Shirasaki (Hammer of the Broads), Andry Lagiou, Keith Saint John (Montrose, Raiding the Rock Vault), Patrick Stone (Budderside), Neil Turbin; keyboard player Dennis Atlas (QRST), drummers Ronnie Ciago (BrandX, Circa), Glen Sobel (Alice Cooper, Hollywood Vampires), Daniel Bermudez (Wilt) and Brian Tichy (Whitesnake) and sax player Scott Page (Pink Floyd, Toto, Supertramp), among others.
Quiet Riot capped off the festivities with a hit filled set which concluded with the Hard Rock staple, “Metal Health (Bang Your Head).” Quiet Riot may have weathered storms, lineup changes, and the passage of time, but their spirit remains unbreakable. Overall, it was a memorable event celebrating music and supporting a great cause!
