Asperity – The Final Demand

Asperity – The Final Demand

Featruring members of Steel Attack among others, Asperity is a heavy metal side project that has proven to be a step above many of the releases we receive.  Vocalist Peter Kronberg sounds somewhat similar to Paul Shortino (Rough Cutt, Quiet Riot) with his raspy, but powerful vocal ability.  Lead track “Will They Come” is a straight-ahead opening track with no particular flash.  The vocal harmonies on “The Pray” call to mind Queensryche and TNT as the song recalls perhaps the “Empire” era of the Ryche.  “I’ll Never Understand” is a faster-paced song with a huge chorus that would play well at metal radio.  “Past Life” has somewhat of a Gamma Ray beat going through and once again strong choruses.  Kronberg’s vocals really shine on the steady-paced “Rebellion”.  Closing track “Sad Eyes” has hints of progressive metal to it similar to mid-period Fates Warning.

After several listens of “The Final Demand” it grows on you more and more.  The dual guitar leads and especially the powerful vocal harmonies help Asperity rise above the second tier power metal bands.  Overall, a first class release.
