The voice of Magnum returns with another pomp laiden solo release that will prove soothing to ears of his fan base. Bob Catley offers up 12 tracks of grandiose pomp rock that remains true to his Magnum roots on When Empires Burn.
Personally, the heavier moments of this CD appeal most to be especially “Children Of The Circle”, “This Is The Day”, and “Someday Utopia”. The title cut “When Empires Burn” is probably the heaviest track on the CD.
“Meaning Of Love” is a heartfelt, emotional power ballad offering a softer side to the CD. “My America” leans close to Catley’s roots with its Irish/Celtic structure. The closing track “When The Earth Lies Still” (not on the promo disc) is probably the most Magnumesque song on the disc.
Catley’s output over the last several years has been prolific and more importantly consistently strong. “When Empires Burn” is another fine example of this excellent songwriter’s efforts.
