Norwegian extreme metal band Lunaris features members of such acts as Borknagar, 1349 and Spiral Architect. Considering the background of the musicians, one should not be surprised at the black metal leanings. However, that is not to say that this CD lacks in variety. Actually, “…The Infinite” blends classical music, with gothic rock, progressive metal and black metal. Lead track “In The Eyes Of The Heretic” dives from one extreme to another weaving an intricate web of musicianship with clean and exteme vocals. “…Of The One” lures you in with a classical piano introduction then slams you with a black speed metal assault and then again with an intricate guitar solo worthy of the likes of Dream Theater. “Mother Of Storms” is an aptly titled song…one moment it is as mellow as a baby’s lullaby then it suddenly develops into a sinisterly wicked composition.
Lunaris wonders deeper into progressive metal territory on “Growth Denied” combining progressive passages with clean and extreme vocals once again. “Primal Construction” has a peculiar intro before developing into a black metal romp. “A Final Journey” is another voyage into black speed metal territory which a wicked layering of keyboards underneath.
“…The Infinite” definitely offers diversity from the gathering of members of several distinctly different bands. By mixing all these styles, Lunaris has recorded a most unique CD that would be difficult for other bands to liberally borrow from.
