Hauntingly beautiful in its darkness, Odes Of Ecstasy’s 2nd release “Deceitful Melody” is an exotic masterpiece of despair. The Greek band’s 8 song, ambient gothic metal release on The End Records is in the upper echelon of the genre along side Therion and Theatre Of Tragedy.
Christina Maniati’s female operatic vocals are a stunning contrast to the slight (but clean) growls of Dimitris Bikos (guitars/vocals) and Nikos Baltas (guitars/vocals). Odes To Ecstasy are wise in not making the male vocals so gruff that it turns away potential power metal fans or fans of bands like the Gathering. Christina’s vocals are most dominant on one of the heavier tracks on the CD “The Floating City Of Sun”. “The Conqueror Worm” features superb musicianship especially from Savvas Dandoulakis on keyboards and the Dueling guitars of Bikos and Baltas. All the while the vocals battle back and forth between beauty and evil. Speaking of evil, the tortureous sounds of “Abstract Thoughts” allow emphasis to shine even more on Christina’s astonishing vocal range.
