Mark Boals second release with his band Ring Of Fire is a virtual who’s who of technical maestros. Virgil Donati (Planet X) on drums, Philip Bynoe (Steve Vai) on bass and Tony MacAlpine (Edge Of Insanity, Planet X) on guitars, and Vitalij Kuprij (Artension) on keyboards fill out this most impressive lineup.
Lead track “My Deja-Vu” certainly sounds like it could have came from Boals days singing for Yngwie Malmsteen. The title cut “Dreamtower” has much more of a progressive feel throughout while “The Pharoah’s Curse” falls moreso into the power metal category. There is a great deal of diveristy to this disc as show by the balladic approach of “Blue Sky” and “Make Believe”.
An appropriate description for “Dreamtower” would be neo-classical power metal with a variety of other influences sprinkled in for good measure. The other influences are what make this release special and set it apart from many metal by numbers releases.
