Royal Hunt returns with “Fear”, their follow up to live CD and last studio CD, Paradox, with a new singer and a somewhat stripped down sound. Relying less on the keyboards than their previous studio CD “Paradox”, The overall sound is remeniscent of recent works by Axel Rudi Pell with more emphasis on the fretwork of guitarist Jacob Kjaer. Still, the keyboards of Andre Andersen give the songs the full sound for which Royal Hunt is famous.
Replacing D.C. Cooper on vocals is Artension frontman John West. West’s vocals sound strong and fit in quite well with Royal Hunt. The title track “Fear” opens the CD in grand fashion clocking in just short of 10 minutes in length. ”Cold City Lights” reminds of Rainbow with West’s vocal phrasings recalling Joe Lynn Turner. The introduction to “Sea Of Time” trades guitar and keyboard parts building into a song that sounds like it would be at home on the first Phenomena CD with West sounding eerily similar to Glenn Hughes.
