I believe we had promised to raise hell (or something similar) until Jackyl returned to Jergel’s during their show last May, and with a raise of hands we swore to do the same in hopes that the venue would take the name of Jackyl’s bar and grill out of fan demand…
Well, demand was certainly high at Jergel’s for Jackyl as they packed in the place for a Saturday night show that covered the band’s thirty-year history. We’ve been there since the first album, and loved every minute of it. From the humorous items raised for “vote” by frontman Jesse James Dupree to the energy of guitarist Jeff Worley and partner in crime Roman Glick on bass to the mist of water sprayed by heavy pounding drummer Chris Worley, it was quite the evening.
The set was riveting from the beginning with fun cuts like “My Moonshine Kicks Your Cocaine’s Ass,” and also old favorites like “I Stand Alone” and “Dirty Little Mind.” As expected there was lots of tongue-in-cheek humor with songs like “Screwdriver,” and the equally entertaining “Get All Up In It” from the band’s latest album, which was released just a year ago this week.
And then, the men from the audience were invited to identify with the ballad “Just Because I’m Drunk,” from the band’s 2016 release ROWYCO, while everyone was invited to sing along in tribute to Elivis when Jesse decided to belt out “Suspicious Minds.”
As always, the smashing finale featured a performance on chainsaw by Jesse who also played a little slide guitar with a bottle before blowing around some sawdust and destroying a wooden bench as he played some blues on the chainsaw for us during “The Lumberjack.”
A year seems like a very long time to wait for an “Encore” so we plan to catch Jackyl again this July at Picktown Palooza along with Lynch Mob in Pickerington, Ohio. Who’s in?
